About the Author
Stories that preserve memory, culture and humanity
Dr Lesa Melnyczuk is a Ukrainian-Australian author, educator and researcher whose work is dedicated to preserving Ukrainian history, culture and lived experience through storytelling.
Drawing deeply from her heritage, family history and academic research, Lesa writes across both historical non-fiction and children’s literature, creating books that connect generations through memory, identity and shared humanity.
Her work explores themes of resilience, migration, belonging, survival and cultural preservation, while offering readers a deeper understanding of Ukraine beyond headlines and history books.
Through historical publications, Lesa documents stories of terror, resistance and survival, ensuring the voices and experiences of Ukrainians are not lost to time. Her research has focused on some of the most devastating chapters in Ukrainian history, including the Holodomor famine-genocide of 1932–1933 and the ongoing impacts of war, displacement and cultural erasure.
Alongside this work, Lesa also creates heartfelt children’s stories inspired by Ukrainian family life, village traditions and the people who shaped her own upbringing. Told through unforgettable characters, Ukrainian Babas, curious chooks and everyday moments of warmth and humour, these stories introduce young readers to culture, compassion and connection in ways that feel joyful, meaningful and accessible.
Many of the characters, stories and experiences woven throughout her books are inspired by real people, memories and moments from Lesa’s own life and family history, bringing authenticity and emotional depth to each publication.
As both an educator and storyteller, Lesa is passionate about creating books that spark curiosity, encourage cultural understanding and preserve stories for future generations.
Her work has been recognised through award-winning publications and continues to resonate with readers, educators, families and communities both within Australia and internationally.

For Lesa, storytelling is an act of preservation.
Through books, workshops, presentations and community engagement, she hopes to create space for conversations around history, identity, migration, resilience and humanity while celebrating the richness of Ukrainian culture and traditions.
Whether writing for children discovering Ukrainian culture for the first time, or adults seeking deeper historical understanding, her goal remains the same:
To ensure stories, memories and voices continue to live on.
